Abstract

Abstract

Diasporic communities such as the Turkish-Germans tend to gather online to constitute online communities. Herein, social media platforms, and especially Facebook, now provide them the opportunity to establish pages that administrators can manage, where particular topics and discussions occur. It is observed that those pages and the performances of the admins could generate an altered version of the mass communication theories of gatekeeping, opinion leadership, and agenda-setting. For this study, the “We Are Not Germanized Turks, We Are Expatriates” Facebook page, which is created by and for Turkish-Germans was selected. After observing the page, the page’s admins were interviewed and the one-year activity on the page was analysed. Discourse and textual analyses were used in order to understand how these theories were reflected on Facebook pages and how admins managed the mentioned page according to these theories. The results suggested that these theories were applied by these admins in various ways to accomplish their aims, which they described in the interviews.
